Nativism and isolationism help shaped the policies in America during the 1920's.
"Isolationism" is the pulling away from world affairs. Isolationists have feared to become involved in European alliances and wars. They seized the idea that America's perception of the world was different from that of Europeans.
They believed they could spread freedom and democracy by means other than war.
While "Nativism," is viewed as the suspicion of foreign-born. It is the belief that native-born Americans have superior rights to the "foreign-born."
By definition nativism and isolationism basically brought the idea of "mind your own business".
After the Great War in Europe ended in 1918, devastated Europeans sought refuge in other parts of the world and many of them tried to come to the United States. Major waves of new immigrants frightened Americans who were disillusioned by the war, hence, the resurgence of nativism and the return of isolationism.
They avoided diplomatic commitments to foreign countries, condemned "un-American" lifestyles, and closed the gates to immigration.
