Elie could have given his shoes in exchange for getting into a good labor unit, but he refuses. Elie claimed that he liked his shoes, and that they were all that he had left of his old life. Still, he had his shoes taken away from him later anyway, receiving nothing in return. Elie Wiesel is a Nobel-Prize winning writer, teacher and activist known for the memoir Night, in which he recounts his experiences surviving the Holocaust. He has also received numerous awards for his literary and human rights activities, which includes the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the U.S. Congressional Gold Medal, the National Humanities Medal, the Medal of Liberty, and the rank of Grand-Croix in the French Legion of Honor.
