Clueless is not based on a Shakespearean play, but rather the novel Emma by Jane Austen from 1815, though some say that the movie does mimic the style of a typical Shakespearean comedy.
Additionally, there are at least 2 allusions to Shakespeare in the movie itself. Cher uses Shakespeare's Sonnet 18 in a note that she forges from Mr. Hall. Also, Heather uses the saying "To thine own self, be true," and incorrectly attributes it to Hamlet. Cher corrects her and says that "Polonius guy" said it.
The film was released on July 19, 1995, and starred Alicia Silverstone, Stacey Dash, and Brittany Murphy; the movie was a parody of a U.S. West Coast teenage girl's lifestyle.
