There is one Dirk Pitt, but Clive Cussler has based a novel on him 21 times. Cussler also has a series of novels known as the NUMA Files that sometimes include Pitt novel characters including Pitt himself. Two of Cussler’s Pitt novels have been turned into movies: Raise the Titanic in 1980 and Sahara in 2005 with Matthew McConaughey playing Pitt.
