Winston is attracted to the paperweight because he is strongly interested in anything from the pre-revolutionary times, of which the paperweight is a part of. The paperweight becomes a symbol of Winston and Julia’s relationship and is smashed during their capture. The paperweight represents Winston and Julia’s relationship; their relationship, like the coral, is revealed and is bare and small beneath the eyes of Big Brother. The author, George Orwell, was a democratic socialist.
