In October Sky, Homer's father’s (John Hickam) is a hard man with expectations for Homer to work in the mines and to grow up the same way as he did.
Homer doesn’t really think that his father cares about him or what he does with his rockets, as there is a scene in the movie when John throws out all of his son’s rocket books and tools because he thinks it is a worthless “hobby “as he calls it.
He finds his father does care about him and what he does by two things that happened. First, when Homer and his friends are building the launch pad, he asks his dad for some cement to use for the base.
At first his father says no and then tells him there is some cement left over from a new driveway the company just built. Second, his father comes to watch Homer and the Rocket Boy’s last rocket, Homer lets his dad push the button to launch the last rocket.
October is generally a busy month for sky watchers. Aside from the total lunar eclipse on October 8th, we'll get another shot at a meteor shower a couple weeks later during the Orionids Meteor Shower, during which Earth travels through the dust/debris trail in the orbit of Halley's Comet.
