Chapter 4 of A People's History Of The United States is entitled "Tyranny is Tyranny". It covers how the Founding Fathers deserve the awed tribute they have received over the centuries, as they have created the most effective system of national control devised in modern times, and showed future generations of leaders the advantages of combining paternalism with command. Howard Zinn was born in August 1922 in Brooklyn, New York. He entered the Army Air Force during World War II and was designated as a bombardier in the 490th Bombardment Group, which targeted places in Berlin, Czechoslovakia, and Hungary. After the war, he studied at New York University on the GI Bill, finishing a bachelor's degree in 1951. Of interest, Purdue University has of late been in an uproar over president Mitch Daniels’ criticism of the use of Howard Zinn’s book in history courses taught in Indiana. (The controversy began when, as governor of Indiana, Daniels objected using Zinn’s highly slanted book in that state’s colleges and universities.) Find out more at National Review Online.
